Some of the Doyles of Restigouche County and surrounding areas (This page is under construction)
The first known Doyle in the area was in the Jacquet River area in 1790. He was James Augustus Doyle , a sergeant in the British service during the American Revolution and he served with his regiment in Canada during the war. When the war ended his regiment disbanded in 1789 and he came to Jacquet River in 1790, where he was the only "permanent" settler between Bathurst (then known as Nipisiquit) and Campbellton . He petitioned for land and filed his claim only in 1821 though.
The river was named after him "Jacques' River" by the Acadian as Jacques is the french translation of James.
Story goes that he claimed a lot of land on either side of his own, up and down the river and many times he faced, (with his musket), and scared away the indians who dared come near it.
I will not attempt here to do anyone's family tree. I will only list the Doyles I find in the Restigouche County census and marriage registers I have or have access to. You can take what you need and do your own tree. As much as possible I will place the families I find in order, but don't expect to find your tree done for you here :)
