Stephen Grover had a brother named Freeman who was married to Sophia Maddocks, a sister named Susan who married Thomas Spinney a lighthouse keeper in Phippsburg Maine, and one named Nancy (Wing) whom Garry Grover has found in Michigan where Stephen visited her on his way to Wisconsin.

Ebenezer Grover and Elsie Trask were Stephen's and Freeman's parents, it is believed, but no proof has been found as of yet, that Ebenezer's parents were Ebenezer Grover and Martha Grant...

1851: In Eldon parish, Restigouche County, New Brunswick, Stephen GROVER is age 55, and Nancy (BORLAND) his wife age 51, their children:

1) Alexander who is age 30 and a lumberer
2) James aged 25, a farmer and proprietor
3) Freeman age 21
4) Milton age 14
5) Mary who is listed as having been adopted and aged 13 years old
6) Stephen Stewart who is living with them a grandson and aged 7 (son of Mary Ann Grover and W. John Stewart)

BORELAND Alexander listed as being age 81 in 1851, his date of entry to NB is listed as being 1797, farmer and proprietor. His wife Frances is age 69 years, English with a date of entry to NB of 1794.
Their children:
1) William aged 31, farmer and proprietor
2) Alexander aged 40
3) John aged 22

BORELAND James age 49, of the USA, born in NB. Farmer and proprietor, his wife Agnes Downs who is aged 35, and her entry date to NB is 1823

1) James age 13
2) Jane who is aged 11
3) Agnes aged 9
4-5) Twins by name of Frances and Sarah


1851: March 12, Matilda Jane GROVER of Addington parish, married William Goodwill of Addington also and they had for witnesses, William Borland and Stephen Grover


1856: Letter from Stephen Grover
Stephen wrote a letter to his brother in July of 1856 and it is addressed from Edmundston, NB., from the contents he seems to have been living there for a while..
A copy of that letter
was sent to me by Garry Grover along with the information from the US census.


1861: May 6, Susan (Grover) Spinney, who is married to Thomas Spinney, a lighthouse keeper, and Stephen's sister, writes a letter to Mr and Mrs Freeman Grover from Phippsburg, Maine.

The GROVER family is gone, and the BORLAND family is listed as follows:
BORLAND Agnes is a widow of 47 yrs and she has her family with her

1) James who is lited as a farmer and age 22 born in NB
2) Jane Ann who is 20
3) Agnes Elisabeth aged 18
4) Louisa who's 12
5) Frances Sophia listed as a twin age 10
6) Sarah Bryce as the other 10 yr old twin
7) William Alexander who's 8


1867: Nov. 14, BORLAND Jane Ann, Addington, married George CUMMINGS of Dalhousie parish, witnesses: William Goodwill and Alexander Cumming


1869: Dec. 23, BORLAND Louisa of Restigouche County, married James GILLIS of Addington parish. Witnesses: John Moffat and R.G. Gordan


1870: Dunn county, Wisconsin, census
GROVER Stephen and Nancy (BORLAND) and their children,
BORLAND William, son of Alexander and brother of Nancy;
(BORLAND) Matilda who had been married to William Goodwill
GROVER Mary Ann who married W. John Stewart.


They were all together on the census so probably lived on adjacent properties.


(Stephen and Nancy 's marriage was performed by the same minister that married Matilda and Goodwill, which would be Rev. James Stephen. (no proof of this yet)


1871: July 19, BORLAND James son of James and Agnes Downs of Eldon parish married Eliza Ann McNAUGHTON also of Eldon. Witnesses: David D. Gerrard and John B. Christopher


1871: Restigouche County census, Eldon parish
BORLAND Agnes,
age 56, widow
She has her children living with her and they are listed as being:
1) James age 31
2) Agnes age 25
3) Sarah age 18
4) William age 16

1871: July 25, BORLAND Agnes of the parish of Eldon married Thomas KNOTT ( or maybe Knox) of the parish of Colborne. Witnesses were : James Smeaton and Archibald Fraser *note* in the 1871 census Agnes is not listed nor is her daughter but there is a Thomas Knox, watchmaker, who is listed as being 65 yrs old and alone in 1871 and 75 and still alone in 1881.


1881: Restigouche County census; Eldon parish

*note the age* aged 30, wife Eliza (Ann McNaughton), listed as being age 21, and the following kids are with them
1) Sarah Brice age 7
2) William Alexander age 4
3) John Dawson born in Nov. of same year


1883: Aug. 29, COOLING Benjamin Simpson of Flatlands, son of John COOLING and Mary MILLER married Martha Jane GILLIS d/o James GILLIS and Catherine BORLAND of Matapedia township

age 35, Carpenter and wife Eliza who's listed as being age 34..

Lets look at their children 10 years later if this is the same James and Eliza Borland

1) Walter who is listed as being age 7
2) Barbarie J. who is age 6
3) Maxwell is age 4
*note* is this the same James and Eliza Borland as in the 1881 census ??
what about the age and children ??
