John MacLean (1811-c1885)

As custom would call for, John the second son was named after his maternal grandfather, John Sinclair. He was born March 11/1811, his birth is registered in the Old Parish Register for Glasgow.

March 5/1834, John married Mary Miller who was born in Scotland around 1810. Oct. 20/1834 he purchased from his brother Angus Jr. the eastern half of the family homestead in Black Land for 100 pounds, NB money.

About a year later Mary and John sold that property for the same price to John Hamilton Sr. a Dalhousie entrepreneur, then they moved to Heron Island, where their 5 children were born.

During winter months, the residents of Heron Island travelled to and from the mainland on the ice. In attempting such a journey, Mary perished in February of 1864. In March of the following year John married Jessie Anderson a native of Scotland who was from a pioneer family of New Richmond, Bonaventure County, Quebec.
