William T. (Bill) McRae

William T. McRae
1969-1980

William Tippett McRae was born in Lancaster, NB on July 5, 1917, son of Frederick John and Mary Pauline (Tippett) McRae. After serving in the Canadian Army in WW II he returned to Campbellton and became a retail businessman and entrepreneur.

He was President of the Campbellton Legion and a member of the Gyro Club, UCT, Masonic Lodge, Campbellton Curling Club. Rotary Club, Charlo Airport Commission and the United Church Board of Stewards.

His Mayoralty term continued Campbellton’s transformation into a Regional Center. He collaborated and partnered with government and private interests to achieve the following:

Completion of the Waterfront Development including the City Center Complex, Office Tower, Hotel, Shopping Mall and Salmon Boulevard.

Construction of Restigouche Gallery.

With infrastructure upgrades to Dover Street East and the demolition of Andersonville (Rabbit Town), Ouellon Sub-division, Apollo 11 Elementary School, Village Nursing Home and Bursey Towers, NB Housing Tingley Crescent affordable housing and Sugarloaf High School were built.

The westward extension of Dover Street, with water and sewer infrastructure, opened commercial and housing lots with Sugarloaf Towers and Harvey Meadows being built.

The Sewerage Treatment Plant and street infrastructure upgrades of fire hydrants, storm and water systems were built.

Potable water reservoir upgrades to Pritchard and Smith Lakes dams and spillages assured improved water supply and pressure.

Increased funding improved existing and new recreational facilities.

Collaboration with NB Power stabilized electricity rates.

He received the Rotary Paul Harris International Fellow Award and the City of Campbellton’s 100 Anniversary Certificate “One Hundred Persons Who Cared”.
